Does Learning Magnitude Knowledge help Students Learn Procedural Knowledge or Vice Versa?
نویسندگان
چکیده
The present study was designed to explore how learning magnitude knowledge and learning procedural knowledge, with respect to both whole numbers and fractions, might be causally related. Neither magnitude knowledge nor procedural knowledge is necessary or sufficient for learning the other, and yet, correlations between the two are ubiquitous (e.g., Siegler & Pyke, 2013). Using correlational data (Structural Equation Models) and accuracy data (Knowledge Space Theory), potential causal models to describe the data were tested. Structural equation models did not differentiate between learning magnitude knowledge helping to learn procedural knowledge or vice versa. However, knowledge space model testing models of accuracy data provides support for the notion that learning procedural knowledge helps learning magnitude knowledge, and evidence against the reverse notion that learning magnitude knowledge helps learning procedural knowledge.

Conceptual and Procedural Knowledge of a Mathematics Problem: Their Measurement and Their Causal Interrelations
Some learning theories see conceptual knowledge as a source of children’s procedural knowledge. Others assume the opposite to be true or posit bi-directional causal relations. Empirical tests of these assumptions are hampered by the lack of knowledge on how to obtain valid measures of these two constructs. We assessed four different measures of both constructs before and after an intervention a...
متن کاملThe conflict between conceptual and procedural knowledge: Should we need to understand in order to be able to do, or vice versa?
The question in the title is the major foci when planning any learning environments. Basically it means that we have to understand how procedural knowledge and conceptual knowledge relate to each other. It seems appropriate to underline that these two types of knowledge must be somehow related when the learning process is our focus. However, it is the variables in the assessment of this process...
متن کاملDoes Comparing Solution Methods Facilitate Conceptual and Procedural Knowledge? An Experimental Study on Learning to Solve Equations
Encouraging students to share and compare solution methods is a key component of reform efforts in mathematics, and comparison is emerging as a fundamental learning mechanism. To experimentally evaluate the effects of comparison for mathematics learning, the authors randomly assigned 70 seventhgrade students to learn about algebra equation solving by either (a) comparing and contrasting alterna...

متن کاملTwo Pedagogical Approaches Linking Conceptual and Procedural Knowledge
There are two fundamental dilemmas that appear throughout human life: (1) Do we have to understand being able to do, or vice versa? and (2) Should things be emphasized as objects or as processes? These dilemmas can be converted to the question of the balance between conceptual and procedural knowledge. This article represents two research-based and empirically tested approaches: the educational...
